New York City is one of America’s greatest cities for a lot of reasons. It can also be overwhelming for visitors, especially if you just want to accomplish something simple like eating lunch. A New York City meal can be many things, including fast, cheap, expensive, and flavorful. Thanks to relatives who are locals, I never have to worry about eating at tourist traps or getting a mediocre meal.

During my recent week there, I ate all over the city. In addition to Caribbean Star in Harlem, which you definitely should not miss, here are some suggestions for your next New York City meal. You’re welcome.

A New York City Meal: Greek Food Near Columbia University

Symposium (West 113th Street) is a 5-minute walk from the Columbia University campus. There is no website but look for the bright blue awning and you’ll know yummy Greek cuisine is near. While the food still doesn’t beat out Big Papa Gyro in Huntsville, Alabama for the best phyllo dough award, you will eat well. As a bonus, you will be greeted by an effusive owner who is genuinely glad to have you there and spend your lunch studying the constellation paintings on the ceiling.

A New York City Meal: Soul Food in Two Locations

Charles’ Pan-Fried Chicken has a back story that you just gotta love. As Southerners, we know our fried chicken. This chicken is crispy on the outside and juicy in the center like it should be. While not quite as salty and divine as Bernie’s in Columbia, South Carolina, we enjoyed every bite of our weekday dinner. The prices are ridiculously reasonable for NYC, too. A three-piece meal with two sides and cornbread will only set you back $17.95. People waited in a line out the door the night we were there for the staff to take a new batch of mac and cheese out of the oven.

A New York City Meal: Indian Food That Doesn’t Just Claim Authenticity

My cousin has Indian friends and she has accompanied them to India. Without a doubt, she knows what Indian food should taste like. That’s why I can recommend Angaar Classic Indian Cuisine without hesitation. My personal favorite is the Palaak Paneer (spinach and cottage cheese simmered with herbs until creamy and decadent). The menu is extensive. . . really extensive. Pick your spice level. Try lots of different things. Experiment. It’s all distinctive and luscious.

New York City is a traveler’s playground. This includes the food options. The choices can be daunting simply because there are so darn many. However, I wouldn’t steer you wrong, so I hope these suggestions help. Just don’t fall in love with one place too much. Businesses turn over a lot in the big city and next time you return, your favorite might be gone. That does, of course, give you the chance to find a new favorite.
