Where should I eat when I am in Greenville, South Carolina? Previously, I’ve written about a couple of really nice dinners that I’ve had at The Trappe Door. If you haven’t tried Belgian food, I highly recommend reading my article about The Trappe Door and then making a reservation right away.

Recently, my husband and I made a new friend while in Greenville and we wanted to go out to dinner. We asked her for suggestions because she is a local. We were very impressed with what she came up with.

Great Food & Classic Rock Music

The Yard House is known for delicious food, classic rock music and a huge beer selection (both domestic and imported). While I am not a fan of beer, I am a fan of delicious food and fun music, so we were very intrigued to have dinner at the Yard House. The Yard House is a small chain of approximately 10 locations around the country. The Greenville location is in a neighborhood called Magnolia Park on the east side of town. The restaurant is right near I-385 and the Magnolia Park Mall, so you can walk off those calories by shopping after you eat.

For Beer Drinkers

Since I am not a beer drinker, I am sorry dear readers, but I cannot tell you much about this aspect of the Yard House. I can tell you that they have roughly 100 beers available from all over America and Belgium, the Netherlands, Ireland, Germany, Mexico and more. For those that are experts in this arena, the beer menu is divided into types and styles for you. There are even several different flights available, so you can try to find a new favorite without breaking the bank. As a result of their focus on quality beers, the bar is smack in the middle of the huge dining room. It’s quite a focal point.

For Food Lovers

The choices here are extensive. The Yard House menu comes from the far corners of the earth with something to please everyone. For example, the appetizer list includes Poke Nachos, Wisconsin Fried Cheese Curds, Korean BBQ Beef Short Ribs and approximately 20 other items. For entrees, there are six different kinds of tacos. I tried a taco combo which allowed me to select two different street tacos. Our dinner companion said she gets the “Vampire Tacos” every time she eats at the Yard House, so I made sure to order one of those and a shrimp taco too. Both were terrific. The vampire taco is special because the tortilla is encrusted with cheese for added flavor. The tacos were topped with yumminess like cabbage, avocado and cilantro and were served with rice and refried beans. It was more than I could finish in one meal, for sure!

My husband walked away happy after eating a plate of Nashville Hot Chicken ($17.99) consisting of two pieces of chicken fried in spicy coating. It was served with fries, pickles spicy honey hot sauce and fried sage as a garnish. During our travels around the South, he has become a huge fan of this style of fried chicken and declared this version just as good as many of the others he has tried.

For Music Lovers

While diners take some time to peruse the giant menu that includes 11 different entrée-sized salads, 5 pizzas, 6 burgers, 9 sandwiches and too many other dishes to count you can enjoy some super fun music. While all restaurants usually pipe in some kind of “muzak,” the Yard House does things differently. Here, the music isn’t supposed to fade into the background. You are supposed to notice it and you are supposed to sing along. At the same time, it wasn’t played at a volume that meant we couldn’t talk with and get to know our new friend. This was a refreshing musical attitude and I liked it! While their website says they play “classic rock”, they in fact, play a wider variety of music than that. You might hear Queen, the Ramones, David Bowie or Def Leppard. I was able to chair dance to a couple of songs. By the way, my apologies to my dinner companions for that. There was a nice big patio outside, and we really enjoyed eating dinner out there after being cooped up inside at work all day.

At the Yard House in Greenville, South Carolina, you can drink in Belgium, eat in Mexico, and dance in the 70’s. . . all in one meal! Oh, what a night! See what I did there? (Frankie Valli, 1975).
